Whole Life Insurance in Walnut Creek
Whole life coverage lasts as long as you pay the premium, which stays level for life, and builds cash value you can borrow against. If you already own a policy, we look at it first and tell you plainly whether keeping it beats starting over.
How whole life works and who it suits
Whole life has three moving pieces: a death benefit for your beneficiary, a premium fixed at issue that never goes up, and a cash value that grows at a rate the contract guarantees. Participating policies from mutual carriers can also pay dividends. Those are not guaranteed, but they can purchase paid-up additions that lift both cash value and coverage.
It fits a need with no end date: a child who will rely on you for life, an estate facing taxes, a partner who will need buyout funds, or the simple goal of leaving a fixed sum. When the need runs out, like a mortgage or the years before the kids are on their own, term life usually covers it at a much lower cost.
We review before we recommend. Plenty of people in Walnut Creek and nearby places such as Lafayette and Danville already own an older whole life policy. A replacement restarts the contestability period and may bring surrender charges, so we raise it only when the figures plainly support it.
What we cover when we work on your policy
- Review of your existing policy
- We read the in-force illustration, the loan balance, the dividend history and the riders. You get a plain summary of what the policy is worth today and what it is projected to do.
- Coverage amount sized to the need
- We work from the actual obligation: estate tax exposure, a buy-sell agreement, a dependent's lifetime care. That keeps you from paying permanent premiums on coverage you do not need.
- Quotes across several carriers
- Underwriting classes, dividend scales and cash value guarantees differ from one insurer to the next. We lay the quotes side by side so you can see the trade-offs instead of a single number.
- Rider selection
- Waiver of premium, accelerated death benefit and paid-up additions riders each change the cost and the cash value curve. We explain what each one does and leave out the ones that do not earn their keep.
- Replacement analysis when it is warranted
- If a new policy may serve you better, we compare surrender value, new contestability, fresh underwriting and any 1035 exchange so the tax treatment carries over. California requires a replacement disclosure, and we walk through it with you line by line.
Signs it is time to look at whole life
Your term policy is nearing its end
Converting term to whole life before the conversion deadline lets you keep coverage without new medical exams. Miss that date and you may have to qualify all over again.
Someone will rely on you permanently
A child with special needs or a spouse with no other income may need support long after a term would have expired.
Your estate or business needs liquid cash
Estate settlement costs and partner buyouts come due at death. A permanent death benefit puts cash where it is needed without forcing a sale.
An old policy you no longer understand
Outstanding loans, lapsed dividends or a premium paid from cash value can quietly drain a policy. A review shows whether it can be kept healthy with a few changes.
How it goes, step by step
- 1
Start with a phone call
We talk through your goals, your general health and any coverage you hold now. No application is filed during this call.
- 2
Review and options
If you have a policy, we ask the carrier for an in-force illustration and go through it together. Then we explain whether to keep, adjust or replace it, and the reasons.
- 3
Applying and underwriting
New coverage usually means the carrier orders a paramedical exam, an MIB report and a prescription history check. Since your class sets the premium, we point out which health details tend to shift it.
- 4
Delivery and review of the contract
Once the policy is issued, we read through the contract with you, check the beneficiary designations and show you the free-look period when cancelling is still an option.

What drives a whole life premium
For the same death benefit, whole life runs higher than term, since some of every premium builds cash value and the coverage never expires. Once the policy is issued the premium is locked, so these factors carry the most weight up front. We show how each one shifts your quote before you sign.
- Your age when issued
- Each year of delay lifts the level premium for the life of the policy, because the carrier has less time to collect it.
- Health and rating class
- Your build, tobacco use, cholesterol and blood pressure decide your rating class. A shift of a single class can move the premium by a visible amount.
- How long you pay
- Spreading payments to age 100 keeps each one smaller. A limited-pay plan, such as 10 or 20 years, costs more each year but ends earlier.
- Riders and dividends
- Participating policies and paid-up additions riders cost more at the start but can grow cash value more quickly. Every rider you add has a charge of its own.
Common questions about whole life
Something not covered here? (925) 261-7628
Should I surrender my old whole life policy for a new one?
Usually not. An older contract can hold a stronger guaranteed rate than policies sold now, and a replacement restarts the two-year contestability period. We put the two side by side on paper and suggest switching only when the new one clearly wins.
How do cash value loans work?
The carrier lends you money secured by your cash value, and the loan builds interest. There is no set repayment schedule, but whatever remains unpaid comes out of your beneficiary's benefit. If the loan grows too large, the policy can lapse, so every review includes a look at loan balances.
Is a whole life dividend guaranteed?
No. Dividends rise or fall with the carrier's investment returns, expenses and mortality experience. Your contract's guaranteed cash value stands on its own and does not rely on dividends.
What separates whole life from universal life?
Whole life comes with a set premium and a guaranteed schedule of cash values. Universal life allows a flexible premium, but its cash value rides on credited interest and policy charges, so it needs closer watching. See our Universal Life Insurance page for the full picture.
Can my term policy be converted to whole life?
A lot of term contracts include a conversion privilege that skips a new medical exam, provided you convert before the contract's deadline. Your new premium is priced at your age when you convert. Give us the policy details by phone and we will confirm the dates.
